    Question

    Hey Guys,
What type of materials I need to build a very effective camera blimp?
I need to reduce the camera noise to take direct sound with my minidisk recorder.
    Thanks,
    Carlos

I hooked up my technical advisor with Super-8 Sound in the early 90-s and he made 10 blimps for Super-8 Sound for the Beaulieu 7008.

The blimp worked fine, but it did make the camera more difficult to use because it was basically a metal box around the camera....with openings for the eye-cup, lens, and a side door to allow one to put new film in the camera.

Of course, mike placement is a big factor when shooting, and shooting in small confines is going to be a probablem with a large majority of cameras.

Some people will throw a furniture pad around the camera.

I strongly recommend you START OUT with a quiet camera, like a Canon 814 or 1014 XLS, and then your blimp design can be simple, like a furniture pad or simple sound deadening material wrapped around the camera.

Remember, sound escapes out of the front of the lens! So experiment first with how much sound you can reduce by simple wrapping some type of deadening material around the camera....this help you see how much sound is going through the lens.

Chinon's were quiet, but not well made.

Outside shoots help! Perhaps someone has a link to a blimp making company.

    Alex
